Friday, April 25                                                                        Southgate Middle School

Drum Barracks staff, docents and volunteers will help bring the Civil War alive for students at Southgate.

 

Tuesday, April 29                                                                    “Wilmington”  books arrive

Hot off the presses, copies of the new book on Wilmington are due to arrive at the Museum.  Published by Arcadia Publishing, this photo book on the community of Wilmington is a part of the recognition and celebration of the city Sesquicentennial, it’s 150th birthday. It was written last year by Susan Ogle, Drum Barracks Museum Director, Simie Seaman, of the Wrigley Banning Historic District, Hank and Jane Osterhoudt of the Wilmington Historical Society, and Michael Sanborn of the Banning Residence Museum

Copies of the book are $19.99 and will be available in the Museum Shop.

 

Tuesday, May 13, 2008                                                                Civil War Book Club

7:30 pm The monthly discussion group of the Richard Rollins Civil War Book Club meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the Drum Barracks Library. This month the group will review Cushing of Gettysburg: The Story of a Union Artillery Commander by Kent Masterson Brown.

 

Saturday and Sunday, May 31 and June 1                                Long Beach Reenactment

At last we have a local reenactment with battles, encampments, sutlers and an incredible array of Civil War displays. Not to be missed, this first annual event will be held at El Dorado Regional Park East, 7550 E. Spring Street in Long Beach.  From the 605 Freeway, you can exit at Spring Street West.  Titled “Gettysburg!”, and featuring battle recreations at noon and 3 pm both days, the event starts  at 10 am and ends at 5 pm. Be sure to stop by the Drum Barracks displays and say hello.  Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for 11 and under with children under 4 admitted free.  There is also an admission fee of $7 to El Dorado Regional Park East, so bring lots of eager visitors in your car.

 

Saturday, June 7                                                                        Steppin’ Back in Time Historical Tour

This second annual historical bus tour sponsored by the Port of Los Angeles , will take visitors on a unique trip through Wilmington and San Pedro. The tour and admission to the museums included are all free.   Very popular last year, this narrated bus tour winds through Wilmington and San Pedro allowing visitors to get on and off at their convenience, spending as much time as they please at each of the six stops. Included are Drum Barracks Civil War Museum, Banning Residence Museum, Banning’s Landing, Los Angeles Maritime Museum, Fort MacArthur Museum and Point Fermin Lighthouse. Add this one to your calendars today.

Noon to 4 pm in Banning Park , this is the thirteenth annual Wilmington Family Picnic.

Saturday and Sunday, July 12, and 13, 2008                            Old Fort MacArthur Days
Fort MacArthur, 3601 Gaffey Street, San Pedro.  Not to be missed, this excellent event at our fellow city-run facility is better every year - well worth an afternoon at the seaside.

Saturday and Sunday, September 6-7, 2008                            Huntington Beach Reenactment In Central Park, sponsored by the Huntington Beach Historical Society.  

Saturday and Sunday, September 13 and 14                            Fiesta de la  Patrias

Held on Avalon Boulevard , this event is sponsored by the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, and is a great addition to a fun filled weekend in Wilmington

Friday through Sunday, July 25, 26, and 27                            Society for Women in the Civil War Conference
Held at Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA this year (25 miles west of Gettysburg),  this annual event is a must for those interested in the roles of women in the Civil War.

Saturday, October 4, 2007                                                            Drum Barracks Civil War Museum Yard Sale            
Join in on our fund raiser where you'll have the chance to buy genuine museum antiques, books and artwork at yard sale prices.  We'll also be offering private sales tables.  Please check back for further details as the date approaches.  .
